FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – Arpan Khanna, Conservative Shadow Minister for Justice & Attorney General of Canada; Frank Caputo, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Safety; and Pierre Paul-Hus, Conservative Quebec Lieutenant, released the following statement on the latest attacks on law enforcement officers in Montreal:
“This week, we were again shocked to hear of yet another attack on our law enforcement officers. On Monday, two Montreal police officers were assaulted, with one of those charged attempting to seize the officers’ weapons. Sadly, violence against law enforcement and first responders is becoming all too common.
“These violent attacks against the men and women who work every day to keep our people safe are unacceptable. But what’s more unacceptable is that once again, we have seen that Liberal bail has tipped the scales of justice in favour of violent criminals, with those charged for this assault on officers being immediately released on bail.
“This latest attack comes barely a month after the deadly shooting in Côte-des-Neiges, where a gunman murdered an innocent civilian and shot and killed a police officer, Mohamed Benredouane, while another officer was critically injured. Last month saw the murder of three officers in just two weeks, including the killing of Constable Marc Pinizzotto.
“Just yesterday, Canadians also learned that the man sentenced to life in prison for murdering Toronto Police Service constable Michael Sweet in 1980 was arrested while out on parole. After being shot, Sweet pleaded for his life for an hour and a half as his killers declared he would never see his daughters again after being shot in the chest and chin.
“Canadians deserve safe streets, and criminals deserve to know that if you attack a police officer, you will find yourself in a jail cell for a long time. Conservatives will always stand with law enforcement and first responders. We will deliver a safe and secure country that finally puts law-abiding Canadians first by repealing Liberal bail for real and for good.”
