FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – Today, the Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on the Liberals’ National Electricity Strategy:

“The Liberal government has made history: they are now the first government ever to preside over a Canadian electricity shortfall.

“In 2024, for the first time on record, Canada could not produce enough electricity for its own people. Instead, we had to import from the U.S. just to keep the lights on. After a decade of Liberals, Canadians are paying 35%more for electricity.

“Today, Mark Carney reannounced the same Liberal policies that hiked prices and cut production over the last decade: industrial carbon taxes, the anti-development law, the failed Infrastructure Bank, tax credits that businesses do not use and, of course, more consultations and talk about doing something someday. It is all an illusion.

“Promises of doubling production and cutting costs are the opposite of what these Liberal policies have done. With Mark Carney, it’s more cost, more delays, more talk, more promises. He is just another Liberal.

“The rising cost and reduced production of electricity under the Liberals results from the industrial carbon tax on natural gas power plants (a tax Carney is raising) and anti-development law Bill C-69 that slows permits for electricity generation and transmission lines.

“Carney specifically mentioned keeping these decade-long, costly Liberal policies. Still, he repeats promises on affordability that he claims will be fulfilled 25 years from now. He also promises more handouts to multinationals like Brookfield for heat pumps and costly, money-losing projects that profit insiders like him.

“That’s why the Conservative plan will:

  1. Eliminate the industrial carbon tax on electricity production and everything else
  2. Scrap Bill C-69 to speed up approvals of power plants
  3. Let provinces safely approve projects without federal interference or red tape”
