Liberal Delays Leave Canada Behind

Ottawa, ON — Shannon Stubbs, Conservative Shadow Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, released the following statement on the American authorization of the Bridger Pipeline:

“Recently, the US President signed an order to approve another cross-border pipeline that will transfer 550,000 barrels of Canadian crude per day to the States, proving once again that pipelines can get approved in the US exponentially faster than in Canada.

“The Prime Minister promised to make Canada an ‘energy superpower’ and diversify exports beyond the US, signing an MOU to build a pipeline to the Pacific. But despite being under the jurisdiction of the federal government, to date, there has been no progress on a pipeline for export in any direction. Recently, the CEO of the Major Projects Office (MPO) herself admitted that there has been no federal consultation with Indigenous stakeholders to date on possible routes.

“The Prime Minister said we have to ‘build at speeds not seen in generations’. But, to date, the Liberals’ $246 million MPO has approved zero major projects and has not designated a single one, anywhere, as being in the national interest.

“A year in, the Liberals still have no trade deal with the US and refuse to scrap the anti-development laws that block building. They also continue to argue for Canada’s federal industrial carbon tax, despite making Canadian businesses disproportionately uncompetitive against the US, which has no corresponding tax.

“After 11 years of the same Liberal government and their anti-development policies, Canada now has the highest household debt, the least affordable housing, the lowest investment per worker, the second-worst productivity and the second-highest unemployment in the G7.

“Business leaders have slammed the Liberals for regulatory burdens that are worse for our private sector than unjustified US tariffs, with Enbridge CEO Greg Ebel saying that ‘the conditions don’t yet exist for that pipeline to be built’. François Poirier, the President and CEO of TC Energy, said that ‘capital goes where it is welcome. And for too long, it hasn’t felt welcome here’.

“That’s why Conservatives want to get shovels in the ground to unleash Canadian investment, support Canadian jobs and make Canada affordable, self-reliant and secure.

“The Prime Minister must get serious and take urgent action that matches his words. That means repealing uncompetitive and anti-development Liberal laws and taxes so that we can expand Canadian energy production and exports by building the pipelines we need to be self-sufficient, resilient and sovereign.”
